So I’m writing this while reading the book ‘Pure, White and Deadly’ by John Yudkin. In chapter 7 Yudkin explains the difference between caloric sweeteners and noncaloric sweeteners (artificial sweeteners).
I recognized one of the noncaloric sweeteners called ‘Aspartame’. I used to drink a lot of coca cola zero and one of the ingredients of coca cola zero is Aspartame. I never knew what it was, but apparently is a noncaloric sweetener/artificial sweetener that is 200 times sweeter than sucrose and it consists of two amino acids, aspartic acid and phenylalanine. 1 out of 18 000 children in The Netherlands and 1 out of 10 000 children in the United States have a condition called phenylketonuria (PKU). Children with this condition shouldn’t consume phenylalanine. It makes them sick and sometimes it can be fatal.
After knowing this, I don’t understand why Coca Cola and many other companies can advertise with slogans like; ‘Geweldige coca -cola smaak, zonder suiker’ translated; ‘amazing coca cola taste. Without sugar’.
According to lawinsider.com the definition of sugar is: ’ Sugar means the organic compound glucose, fructose, xylose, arabinose, lactose, sucrose, starch, cellulose, or hemicellulose. ‘.
The definition consists of caloric sweeteners. This might be the reason why coca cola can advertise with ‘zero sugar’.
Tl;dr: don’t consume crappy victuals.
